Chapter Twelve

Welcome Inn Tucson

South Country Club Road

Tucson, Arizona

Halfway between Benson and Tucson, an Arizona State Patrol trooper pulled up beside Zach. The state trooper waved at Zach, motioning for him to look behind him. A second state trooper waved for Zach to move over into the fast lane in front of him. Zach moved over into the fast lane between the two state patrol cars, matching their speed. As Zach and the state troopers raced toward Tucson, he noticed additional state troopers clearing traffic ahead of them.

Zach glanced down at the instrument panel to verify the SUV was performing okay at such a sustained high speed. None of the gauges revealed any problems. He took a quick look at the speedometer and saw they were doing one hundred ten miles per hour. The state troopers were maintaining a four car-length distance in front of and behind Zach. If they were to encounter an obstacle in the road, the result would not be pretty.

As they approached the outskirts of Tucson, the traffic increased and the troopers slowed down to ninety miles per hour. Zach’s cell phone rang. He tapped a button on his Bluetooth headset. “Zach Templeton,” he answered.

“Mister Templeton, this is Trooper Richard Ruiz. I’m the patrol car in front of you. Where are you headed?”

“The Welcome Inn on South Country Club Road,” Zach answered.

“Okay, we will take the East Irvington Road exit. It’s coming up soon. Follow me onto the exit. We will turn left onto East Irvington Road and cross under the interstate. South Country Club Road will be the second left. When we pass under the interstate, we will turn off our emergency lights and siren. You will turn left onto South Country Club Road. We will not follow you, but will remain in the area.”

“Thank you, Trooper Ruiz. I appreciate the escort.”

“Glad to be of assistance, considering the importance of your visit. Sheriff Potter passed along the details. We have all troopers on alert for the car you described. We have also advised the Tucson City Police.”

“That’s great, but do not attempt to stop him. It’s imperative I get him cornered somewhere. He is the last lead I have. If anyone spots him, notify me. I will cruise the hotel’s parking lot and if I don’t see his car, I will park out of sight and wait for him.”

“Understood. If you need additional assistance, do a call back to this number. I will be close by.”

“Will do. Thanks again for the escort,” Zach answered as he reached up and tapped the Bluetooth headset to disconnect the call.

Two miles later Trooper Ruiz signaled Zach to follow him over to the exit lane. Another half mile and Trooper Ruiz exited the interstate and turned left at the end of the exit lane. As they passed under the interstate, the two patrol cars switched off their emergency lights and sirens, to the surprise of several confused motorists who had pulled to the side of the road and stopped.
